The Lady Sagehens' debut would've been much better had it been a win. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, as the Sagehens fell behind early and often against San Diego Christian. The Hawks lit them up (45% shooting), stifled them (forcing PP to shoot 37% and cough up the ball 30 times) and out-rebounded them (41-31, 19 of them coming from the offensive end).
There were some positive developments that the Sagehens can take away. They shot 75% from the line and sank 6 treys out of 13 attempts. The latter figure was due in large part to guard Emi Hashizume, who came off the bench to drill 4 3-balls and score 12 points. Freshman post Maria Wayhrauch also had a nice debut, scoring 12 points on 4-6 shooting and 3-3 from the line.
Junior transfer Alexis Sones (from Bowdoin) had a solid debut for the Sagehens. Her performance indicates that she will become a key contributor to the Pitzer Pomona squad, which is still trying to distance itself from a 3-20 campaign last season.
To grab the win against the Boxers from Pacific (Oregon), who went 7-18 last season, the Sagehens have to be worried about Senior wing player Erica Schultz. She is a steady, well-rounded player, averaging 13 points and 5 boards per contest. The inside threat for the Boxers is Paige Jenson, who averaged 10 points and 9 boards a game.
The game will be played in Rains Gym, on Friday Nov. 18, at around 7 pm.
