Game Recap by Drew Beckerman
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags defeated the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 24-14 in the final game of season for both of these teams. As this game was homecoming for the Stags as well as the final game of college football that the seniors on these teams would play, it did not disappoint.
The first half of the game featured a solid running attack by the Stags as they jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead behind a 34-yard touchdown run by Peter Kimmey, a 56-yard touchdown run by Corey Bickler, and a 14-yard touchdown run for Alex Wheatley, who finished the game with 14 rushes for 70 yards.
The second half of this game was nothing but inspiring. The third quarter was a defensive masterpiece as no team was able to put any points on the scoreboard. In the fourth quarter, when the CMS Stags were held on third down on the ten yard line, instead of sending out starting kicker Chet Corcos to kick the field goal, they instead opted to send out the senior backup Jordan Santo. Santo converted his only field goal of the year, a 25-yard field goal, as fans and teammates cheered and applauded.
However, in the last few minutes seconds of the game, Pomona-Pitzer was able to work their way up the field to score a touchdown on a 4-yard run by quarterback Luke Sweeney with 38 seconds left in the game. They then were able to recover the football on a short kick-off, and senior Kareem Smedley caught a 15-yard pass from Fergusson with 19 seconds left in the game to end the game 24-14 in favor of CMS.
Both of these teams had so much to be proud of in their final game of the season. As for Pomona-Pitzer, although they weren’t able to win a game this season, they ended the season with the most spectacular half of football of the year, outscoring CMS 14-3 in the second half and limiting the Stag offense to a total of 54 yards. As for CMS, they won their rivalry game to end the season 4-5 (3-3 in conference play), and were able to celebrate the careers of their seniors in both a brilliant and heart-touching fashion.
