The CMS Stags remain undefeated (6-0) after tonight’s win against Master’s College (6-1) 71-65.

The game started off looking like it was going to be determined inside, with the first 8 points of the game being scored in the paint. However, CMS was able to open its outside game and take a commanding first half lead. The key player of the half was junior guard Cody Mivshek who had 18 of his game-high 21 points, 9 of which came from perfect shooting beyond the arc. Junior Forward Kevin Sullivan added two threes of his own, contributing to the Stag’s outstanding performance from downtown. The team finished the half with a twenty-point lead on 56% shooting. On the other side, Master’s College struggled to get going, getting outrebounded 20-10 and only shooting 34.6%.

The tone of the game changed entirely in the second half as Master’s College orchestrated an impressive run to bring the game within 4 points. Key factors were their ability to shoot 57.1% from the field and 58.3% from beyond the arc while holding CMS to 20% and 16.7% respectively. Unfortunately for Master’s College, they accumulated too many fouls, which resulted in double bonus for CMS with five minutes to go. This had huge consequences, as CMS made 16 free throws in the half on 85.7% shooting. Master’s College got as close as two points, but clutch free throws from sophomore guard Tyler Gaffaney staved off the final push.

CMS finished the game with more turnovers and a lower shooting percentage from the field than their opponents, but led in other important categories. In addition to shooting 83.9% from the line, the Stags outrebounded Master’s College 37-25. Another factor working against Master’s College were their 22 personal fouls. Senior guard Cammon Anthony had 20 points to lead Master’s College and was aided by junior guard Leif Karlberg who had 17 on the night. CMS had four players with double-digit figures, with Chris Blees registering a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds).

The CMS Stags will travel to San Diego Christian on December 5.
