Fall Break Sports Update

While many of us were away enjoying fall break last week, the CMS sports teams were hard at work. The Men’s Water Polo team took on three opponents over the weekend. On Friday, the men traveled to San Diego to take on UCSD, where they lost 20-4 against the 7th-ranked Tritons. On Saturday, the Stags came home to defeat La Verne in their SCIAC opener 10-6 and then dropped a 12-8 decision to Brown University later in the day. With the rougher waters of their schedule behind them, the men eagerly await conference competition.

The Stag’s Football team hosted Cal Lutheran. The Kingsmen have been in and out of the nation’s Top 25 rankings all season, but the Stags showed up ready to play. After going down 10-0 in the first, Brock Olson (CMC JR) returned an interception 71 yards to get the boys back in the game. Cal Lu would add another touchdown and field goal to push the score to 20-7 at halftime, but the Stags would not go down without a fight. D.J. Lillard (CMC JR) busted a 80 yard run to narrow the margin to 20-14. Cal Lu tagged on another field goal and the game ended in a hard-fought 23-14 loss for the Stags.

Women’s Volleyball spent the weekend preparing for a relaxed Tuesday double-header, a mid-season break from their steady flow of intense SCIAC showdowns. On Tuesday, the girls first faced La Sierra, and won 3-0. Nearly the whole team saw time on the floor, and they overmatched La Sierra in every part of the matchup. Later in the day, the women took on Cal Tech for the second time this season, posting another 3-0 victory. Again, Coach Dianna Graves was able to play most of her team, with 16 Athenas hitting the hardwood.

Men’s Soccer had their second installment of the “6th Street Showdown” with rival Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday of Fall Break. After a heartbreaking, closing seconds loss earlier this season to the Sagehens, the Stags eagerly wanted to get one back. This time, their efforts earned them a 1-1 draw, which was not ideal, but keeps them in position to make the season-ending conference tournament.

The Women’s Soccer team defeated Pomona-Pitzer 2-0 back in late September, and were looking for another dominating performance to keep them in the driver’s seat of SCIAC. Unfortunately, the girls dropped a 3-0 decision, and they have slipped slightly behind in conference play. The Athenas can right the ship with the remaining SCIAC games, where they will look to gain momentum for the conference tournament.

The Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams ran at the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet on Saturday October 18th at La Mirada Park. The Athenas won the meet, led by SCIAC Athlete of the Week Evelyn Ross (SCR SR) who was the overall winner, and Julia Rigby (SCR FR) who was seconds behind as the Athenas placed 4 runners in the top 7. The Stags finished 3rd, behind Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer. The top finishers for the team were Florian Scheulen (HMC SR) in 6th, Chris Gurney (CMC SR) in 11th, and Bryan Chow (HMC FR) in 12th.
