CMS Sports Update: Oct. 5-12

The Men’s Water Polo team traveled to Riverside to take on Cal Baptist University. The Stags and Lancers faced off just over a month ago, when the Stags found themselves on the losing side of a 17-9 game. The Lancers started hot, scoring three goals in the first quarter, and then both teams added two goals in the second period for a 5-2 halftime margin. The Stags and Lancers battled back and forth, but CBU proved to tough in the end, winning 10-5. Women’s Soccer had a great week, posting three wins. On Wednesday, in a matchup between conference leaders, the Athenas defeated Redlands’ Lady Bulldogs 1-0. On Friday, the girls notched a 4-2 win over visiting UC Santa Cruz, getting two goals and an assist from Giselle Galanto (CMC JR). On Sunday night, the Athenas took on St. Olaf College and won 2-1 in double overtime. They are 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC.

The Men’s Soccer team went 1-1 on the week. They dropped a 2-0 decision at Redlands on Wednesday, then rebounded with a 3-1 victory over the Beavers of Cal Tech. They continue SCIAC play through the end of the month, hosting Redlands for the conference finale November 1st. They are 4-5-3 overall, and 4-2-2 in conference.

The Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams had a weekend off from competition after last week’s meet in Salem, Oregon. They return to competition over fall break with the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet on the 18th.

Women’s Volleyball had a wild week. On Tuesday, the Athenas defeated Occidental’s Tigers 3-1. Then the women traveled to La Verne for the Leopard Invitational this weekend. The tournament featured the top three teams in the country. In their opening match, the Athenas took on the #2 team, Emory. The girls played the Eagles extremely tight but lost 3-1. In the second match, the Athenas played SCIAC rival La Verne, the #3 team in the nation. The Athenas did not play their best and lost 3-0. In their tournament finale, the Athenas stunned #1 Juniata College 3-2. The win has been called the biggest in program history, and was the signature game of the tournament. After Juniata forced a decisive fifth set, the Athenas won the first 9 point of the final stanza and did not look back.

The Men’s Football team continued conference play, hosting La Verne Saturday night at Zinda Field. A week after being held scoreless against Occidental, the Stags put up 44 points against the overmatched Leopards. Dan Picciotto (CMC JR) got the Stags on the board first with a 52-yd interception return, and the men never looked back. The offense added 4 more touchdowns, while Ashton Clarke (CMC SR) returned a blocked field goal 70 yards for a touchdown. The Stags return to action at home against Cal Lutheran over fall break.
